One day at a party on the yacht of a man who was considered the hottest of the new breed of producer/ directors, I saw the most beautiful woman in the world standing between my host and his current wife. Her beauty, the intensity of it, scared me. I couldn’t look at her and I couldn’t look away.

I kept track of her, knew at almost every moment where she was, who she was talking to or standing next to, without going up to her or seeking an introduction. My opportunity would come. It was a smallish party in a small space. If I didn’t move, she would eventually find her way to me. A woman that beautiful, I thought, would have a natural resistance to being pursued.

I was prepared to be disappointed when we finally met.

Her name was Nadia, and she spoke English with one of those accents that American actors used to use when playing immigrants or characters in foreign countries. She was almost as charming as she was beautiful.

“What do you do?” I asked her.

“I don’t do,” she said. “I merely am.” She laughed at the pretentiousness of her remark, mocked herself.

“Are you an actress?”

“I’m a guest,” she said. “A guest, from where I come, is also an actress.”
